Hey Angela - personally - can't stand either the series or the books and I am a goth/vamp/magic/fantasy genre buff. Bought the 1st series DVD (before I read the 1st book) and made myself watch it all and then chucked it to a friend as soon as I could. (the graphic sex clip in it might have had something to do with that too though) Shocked Rolling Eyes

They seem to be a little like the Rolling Eyes Twihard series - tries very hard but suffers from poor writing. I want to smack Sookie as much as I want to smack whatever-her-face is in Twilight.

But I know a number of people who think that it is a best thing since sliced bread - so each to their own. Wink I'd love to hear what you think of it.

I've just finished Bloodring - a post-apocalyptic ice age novel by Faith Hunter where humanity has lived beyond the end of days promised in the Book of Revelations;- survived the return of the seraphim (hmmm - who ever thought the angel of death could be so studly?), Laughing several plagues and is now living according to the tenents of the Lord on High, battling the demons, fallen angels and other spawn of the Darkness. (loving all those yummy words lmao) The main character is a neomage - human but born without a soul and able to wield the leftover creation energy in her stone magic.

The story is very interesting and fairly well written - the whole concept of the post-end-of-days, living with seraphim/demons and the possibility that they are not of religious origin but are extraterrestrial - makes it a very compelling (for me anyway) book to read. It's not a concept done to death yet - like vampires - so it is nice to read something new.

Not reading much at the moment other than to finish that one - busy trying to get through the first season of Fringe and loving every moment. I have the 4th season of Supernatural to get to as well - so the pile of books on my bedside table might have to wait a bit. I can watch and scrap but not read and scrap. lol

LOL Ngaire, having just finished reading the Charlaine Harris series I can see why you found the main character, 'Sookie' annoying - she was a lot of the time! Wink I did think her character got a bit better in the later books though, but there was a bit too much teenage petulance at times for someone who was supposed to be in an adult their mid-late 20s. Rolling Eyes There were contradictions from one book to another which were annoying too and the author could have benefited from a decent continuity editor. There are also so many unfinished 'stories' that I think the author can milk this series for quite a few more books before it's finished. I didn't realise this wasn't a complete series when I started reading the 9 books.

Overall verdict - even though they were far from the best books I've ever read, I didn't mind the series and can see how it could easily be turned into a tv show. I get to read a lot travelling on the train to/from work and they were a very easy uncomplicated read (finished a book a day - yes I read fast and tv has also been boring lately so I've been reading instead) so I can hand the books back to my girlfriend now and am glad I borrowed them and didn't buy them. Wink Smile

I've just finished reading a couple more Belinda Alexandra books, Silver Wattle and Wild Lavender. Having now read 3 of her books in the past month they have become pretty predictable as she seems to have used the same formula for all three books, but set them in different countries (Australia, Italy & France). They have all been set in the early 20th century and ended around WWII. The stories have been a variation on a theme about a girl being born into a hard life, finding her perfect love but is thwarted, rises from rags to riches but isn't 100% unhappy until the last page of the book lol. Considering these books are around 500+ pages, it's a long time to the end page for the 'happy ever after' bit. Wink

I'm about to start reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo next.

ugh - I started that - it's somewhere in my pile - must get back to it

About to do book three of the See No; Speak No; Fear No Evil series by Allison Brennan. Absolutely gob-smackingly awesome books - the cannot put them down type. Crime/suspense with a touch of romance books. Definitely the sort of books that go too fast.

Well I've finished the 'The girl with a dragon tattoo' and oh boy, I didn't realise its original swedish title was 'Men who hate women'. I think its original title really conveys what happens in this story. Shocked Shocked Shocked I might see if I can borrow the other two books in this trilogy from the library as it was worth reading. Smile

Thought I'd give Bloodring a go after reading your post Ngaire and I enjoyed it too and liked Faith Hunter's writing style. Unfortunately the library doesn't have book 2 or 3 in this series so I've just ordered them and they should be here in the next week or two. I'll read "The girl who kicked the hornet's nest next" (book 3 of the girl with a dragon tattoo series) while I'm waiting for my books to arrive. Smile

they've been lost at the post office for a fortnight - my poor bookseller was going out of her tree worrying about them Shocked but if I open the box there will be no scrapping for weeks until I finish them all Rolling Eyes

glad you liked it
